The story of Ovenden Earthmoving is one of evolution – shaped by family enterprise, operational expertise and a steady expansion into major civil engineering works across the UK.
Foundations in the 1970s
The origins of the business lie in the 1970s, when the Ovenden family established a strong presence in construction and aggregates across Kent. Their operations spanned earthworks, haulage, landfill, and plant hire – forming a practical, hands-on foundation in heavy ground engineering.
It was during this period that Christopher Paul Barwick entered the industry, working within and alongside Ovenden-led operations. This early exposure would prove pivotal, shaping a career deeply rooted in earthmoving and infrastructure delivery.
Building structure in the early 1980s
By the early 1980s, the earthmoving division within the Ovenden Group had become more clearly defined. As the scale and complexity of projects grew, so too did the need for structured operational leadership.
Chris Barwick emerged as a key figure during this phase, taking on senior responsibilities in earthworks and civil support. Alongside him, members of the wider Ovenden family – including Robin Hugh Ovenden – continued to guide the strategic direction of the business.
1985: A defining moment
The incorporation of Ovenden Earthmoving Co Ltd in 1985 was a major milestone. It brought the earthmoving operations into a standalone company, combining Ovenden family ownership with Barwick’s operational leadership.
It was a strategic step that transformed a division into a focused contractor – capable of taking on increasingly complex and large-scale projects.
Establishment and early growth
Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, the company established itself as an independent contractor. With Barwick confirmed as a director, the business concentrated on core services including bulk earthworks, site preparation and industrial groundworks.
This period laid the groundwork for future expansion, building both technical capability and a reputation for reliable delivery.
Expansion into major infrastructure
The 1990s saw the company step confidently into major infrastructure projects. Works during this period included involvement in road improvements such as the A299 Thanet Way dualling and enhancements along the M2/A2 corridor.
Beyond highways, the company contributed to embankments, reservoir construction, and landfill engineering. These projects marked a shift from pure earthmoving into broader civil engineering disciplines.
Capabilities expanded to include drainage systems, ground stabilisation and environmental earthworks – signalling the company’s transition into a more comprehensive contractor.
Transition of ownership: 2000–2006
Between 2000 and 2006, the business underwent a gradual ownership transition.
A key turning point came in 2006, when a senior Ovenden director exited the board. From this moment, Barwick became the principal controlling figure, ushering in a new era of leadership.
Growth under majority control
From 2006 to 2023, the company expanded significantly under Barwick’s direction. Its portfolio diversified into coastal defence, environmental remediation, and large-scale infrastructure works.
During this period, the business established itself as a respected regional contractor across the South East, known for delivering complex ground engineering and civil projects.
2023: A moment of loss and continuity
In June 2023, the company faced a profound loss with the passing of Christopher Paul Barwick. His leadership had shaped nearly four decades of growth and transformation.
Continuity and his legacy were maintained through a strong and experienced operational team, ensuring stability during a period of transition.
A new chapter: Management buyout
Following Barwick’s passing, the business entered a new phase. After estate transition, a management buyout (MBO) was completed, led by the senior leadership team and supported by continued involvement from the Barwick family, including his son.
This ensured that the company retained both its independence and its deeply embedded values.
2026 and beyond: Rebranding to OEC
In 2026, the company rebranded to OEC – marking the beginning of a new era while honouring its legacy. Positioned as a Tier 1 specialist contractor for complex environments, OEC represents the culmination of 40 years of experience, adaptability, and growth.
A legacy built on ground engineering excellence
From its roots in family-run aggregates and earthworks to its position as a modern civil engineering contractor, the company’s journey reflects resilience, technical evolution and strong leadership.
Four decades on, the business continues to build on its heritage – delivering infrastructure that shapes the landscape while carrying forward the values that defined its beginnings.
