We are a specialist national contractor for earthmoving, crushing & recycling, and flood, coast & marine defences, delivering market-leading capability and reliability on some of the most complex civil engineering projects in the country.
Whether working on land, at the coast, or through sustainable materials recycling, we are driven by a responsibility to protect, enhance and sustain the environments and communities in which we operate.
By combining large-scale earthworks, flood, coast and marine defence capability, and on-site crushing and recycling, we materially reduce interface risk and operational complexity. Our self-delivery model provides clearer accountability, tighter programme control and safer, more predictable site operations.
We are committed to carbon reduction, protecting and enhancing the environment, and demonstrating social value in how we operate. Through innovation and progressive initiatives, we are developing new sustainability solutions that meet our partners goals, reinforcing the legacy we want to leave.
Our history
Foundations to formation (1970s–1985)
In 1985, Ovenden Earthmoving Co Ltd was formed, with Chris Barwick leading operations after having previously established himself within the Ovenden family business.
Our history
Establishment & expansion (Late 1980s–1990s)
The company initially established its reputation through bulk earthworks and site preparation, before progressing into major infrastructure delivery. Its portfolio subsequently expanded to include highways, embankments, and environmental works, enabling the development of a fully integrated civil engineering capability. A key milestone project involved significant sections of the dualling of the A299 Thanet Way, as well as the widening of the M2/A2 corridor between Gillingham and Rochester.

Leadership & growth (2000–2023)
Ownership transitioned as Barwick became the principal controlling figure in 2006. The business grew into a leading South East contractor delivering complex infrastructure and environmental projects.

Looking forward
Following a management buyout, the company continues independently with strong leadership and family involvement. In 2026, it rebrands to OEC – building on 40 years of heritage and positioning as a Tier 1 contractor.
