Right across our business, sustainability is not a standalone initiative
Sustainability is embedded in how we plan, mobilise and deliver complex civil engineering works and act as a responsible business.
As a specialist national contractor for earthmoving, crushing and recycling and flood, coast and marine defence works, we operate in environments where environmental impact, programme certainty and public scrutiny intersect. In these contexts, sustainability is inseparable from safety, reliability and risk management.
Our approach is structured around three pillars – planet, places and people – underpinned by our core commitments to sustain, protect and enhance.
We believe responsible delivery means:
- Sustaining natural resources through intelligent material reuse and reduced unnecessary movement
- Protecting communities, ecosystems and project stakeholders through controlled, safe operations
- Enhancing environmental and social outcomes beyond minimum compliance
By integrating earthworks, materials processing and coastal capability within a single specialist delivery model, we reduce interface risk, lower carbon exposure and optimise site efficiency. Fewer subcontracting interfaces mean clearer accountability, tighter environmental control and safer, more predictable delivery.
Our sustainability strategy is therefore not defined by statements – it is demonstrated through operational decisions, measurable performance and long-term partnership with our Tier 1 clients.
We're proud to be bring responsible, meaningful actions…
for planet
Our approach to environmental responsibility is built around practical, measurable actions that reduce impact across every stage of a project.
for people
We believe responsible project delivery means protecting both people and the places in which we work.
for places
We prioritise safety on every site, with rigorous training, compliance procedures and a proactive safety-first culture.
Our journey
We recognise that as a contractor operating large-scale plant, managing significant material volumes and delivering complex infrastructure in sensitive environments, our work has an environmental footprint. We do not underestimate that responsibility.
Our sustainability strategy is therefore a structured, measurable journey – not a finished position. We are continually strengthening how we reduce carbon, optimise material reuse, improve energy efficiency, protect biodiversity and enhance social value. Some initiatives are well established; others are in development as technology, data and industry standards evolve.
What matters is progress, transparency and accountability. We set targets. We measure performance. We report honestly. And we adapt where improvement is needed.
Sustainability at OEC is not about claims of perfection – it is about disciplined, demonstrable advancement.
